Trip to Japan: Designing With Transparent Elements (11/24/24)

The intention behind my creation of this art piece was to explore the possibilities of physical design when incorporating elements of differing transparencies. The illustrations in each section highlight elements of Japanese culture, coming together to form a cohesive work of art.

Design Process

After selecting and finalizing the design concepts, I sketched the bottom designs onto Bristol Paper using pencil.

I then proceeded to add color to the bottom design using watercolor.

To incorporate elements of differing transparency, I utilized black paper (no transparency), tracing paper (partial transparency, and a mylar sheet (full transparency).

After cutting each top layer to match the proportions of the bottom designs, I made individual changes to fit their unique transparencies. For the black paper, I made a cut out to showcase the moon from the bottom design. I sketched and watercolored a shrine design on the tracing paper to act as the foreground, with the bottom design appearing as the background. On the mylar sheet, I used colored markers to create a flower that acts as an additional asset to the bottom coy fish design. I then taped the transparent elements above their designated designs to finalize the art piece.
